Quick labels: Mozambique as the next “drug-trafficking hub”

By Pedro Seabra

Whenever the international community debates the worldwide drug trafficking problem as well as the inherent destabilizing consequences to any local states involved, Western Africa is consistently brought up as an example – although naturally, for the wrong reasons. Still, recent reports have supposedly shed a new light in its Southern counterpart, with a particular focus on Mozambique.

Indeed, the designation by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of Mohamed Bachir Suleman – one of Mozambique’s leading tycoon and unsurprisingly, FRELIMO’s strongest financiers – as a “large-scale narcotics trafficker”, who’s alleged network “contributes to the growing trend of narcotics trafficking and related money laundering across Southern Africa”, has cast redoubled concerns on the fragile social and political equilibrium of the African nation.

However, the truth is, no one really doubted that Mozambique long served as a useful channel for traffickers, smugglers and a myriad of other criminal activities, often falling under the radar of locally-inefficient law enforcement structures. Faced with an ‘inconvenient’ but easily-recognizable truth, the donor community and the international specialized agencies opted to ignore the troubling signs and chose instead to support national stability and local development, without properly tackling these potentially disturbing factors, that ultimately, end up jeopardizing the entire surrounding region.

But now that Interpol has rushed to the rescue – with the first visit ever of their secretary-general to the country since it joined the organization in 1989 –, Mozambique will most certainly climb to the top of priorities, as the latest regional “drug-trafficking hub”. Either way, effective as this labels may be, they are hardly groundbreaking news.
